Society Registration in Kenya – Requirements, Process & Benefits

Why Societies Matter

A society in Kenya is a group of people who come together for a common purpose such as religious fellowship, cultural promotion, professional networking, or welfare activities. Unlike NGOs or CBOs, societies are registered under the Registrar of Societies and operate more as associations than service-delivery organizations.

At Luvisia Digital, we assist Kenyans and the diaspora in navigating the society registration process making it fast, affordable, and compliant with legal requirements.

What Is a Society in Kenya?

A society is defined under the Societies Act (Cap 108) as any club, company, partnership, or association of 10 or more persons that has a continuous existence for a common purpose.

Examples of Societies:

  • Religious organizations (churches, mosques, ministries)
  • Cultural groups (heritage or language preservation groups)
  • Professional associations (welfare groups, unions, clubs)
  • Community welfare associations (self-help groups with broader scope)

How a Society Differs from NGOs and CBOs

  • Society → Broad associations (religious, cultural, professional, welfare).
  • NGO → Strictly non-profit, focused on donor-funded charitable projects, regulated by the NGO Coordination Board.
  • CBO → Small-scale, community-based groups operating at county level.

If your group is religious, cultural, or professional, a society is the right choice.

Requirements for Society Registration in Kenya

To register a society, you need:

  • A constitution outlining objectives, membership rules, and governance.
