How to Verify Academic Certificates on the KNEC Portal

Why Certificate Verification Matters in Kenya

In Kenya, forged academic certificates have long undermined the credibility of both public and private institutions. A recent government audit revealed thousands of civil servants used fake or unverifiable papers.

To fight this, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) launched a digital verification portal for fast, real-time checks.

This move supports:

  • Honest job recruitment
  • Merit-based promotions
  • Reduced fraud
  • Easier validation of qualifications for employers, schools, and agencies

What You Can Verify on the KNEC Portal

You can verify certificates for:

  • KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education)
  • KCSE (Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education)
  • Other KNEC-issued results and qualifications

Both historical and future results are included in the system.

Who Can Use the KNEC Verification Portal?

  • Employers (especially in public service)
  • HR and recruitment firms
  • Educational institutions
  • Government agencies (e.g., Public Service Commission)
  • Individual candidates who want to confirm their results

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Verify Academic Certificates on the KNEC Portal

Step 1: Visit the Official Portal

Go to the KNEC’s online verification system:

You’ll be redirected to the Query Management Information System (QMIS).

Step 2: Register for an Account

  • Click “Register” if you’re a first-time user.
  • Provide your full name, email, ID number, and password.
  • Confirm your account via email.

Employers and institutions must also provide official business details.

Step 3: Log In and Choose ‘Certificate Verification’

  • Enter your credentials
  • Click on Certificate/Result Verification service

Step 4: Upload Scanned Certificate(s)

You will need:

  • Clear scanned copy of the certificate (PDF/JPG)
  • Basic info about the candidate (name, index number, year of exam)
  • Payment details (see below)

Step 5: Pay the Verification Fee

KNEC charges KES 2,320 per certificate for local verification. Payment is done via:

  • M-PESA PayBill: 250544
    • Account Number: Enter your Request ID from the portal

Other payment methods: Bank deposit (details are provided during the application).

Wait for Results

Verification usually takes 5–15 working days, depending on the volume of requests.

You’ll receive a confirmation report via email or portal, confirming whether the certificate is valid, invalid, or not found.

Key Notes

  • You no longer need to physically visit KNEC offices for verification.
  • Only authorized institutions (starting with the PSC) will access the central database directly.
  • Verification requests must match details on the uploaded document—errors can delay the process.
  • The system will eventually cover all education levels under KNEC.

Common Use Cases

  • HR background checks
  • Scholarship and admissions validation
  • Immigration and visa applications
  • Internal audits in government offices
  • Candidate self-checks before interviews
