How to Replace Lost KNEC Certificates in Kenya

Why Replace a KNEC Certificate?

KNEC issues official certification letters to confirm KCSE or KCPE results when the original certificate has been lost or damaged. This is accepted by employers and institutions as legal proof of your results.

Eligibility: What You Can Replace

KCSE and KCPE certificates from 1981 onwards.
Only one replacement is issued per exam type per candidate.
If your certificate is unrecoverable, a statement of results may be issued instead.

Required Documents

Before applying, gather:

  • Copy of original certificate or result slip (mandatory)
  • Police abstract (original) confirming the loss
  • Sworn affidavit verifying your identity (High Court)
  • Recommendation letter:
    • From your former school head teacher recommendation from County/Sub‑County Education Officer (for private or closed schools)
    • Or an employer letter for employed individuals.
  • Registrar of Persons confirmation (NSSF building, Nairobi) confirming your identity.
  • Valid ID or passport (with matching name) or birth certificate (for minors)
  • Passport-size photo
  • Legal documents if your name has changed (e.g., marriage certificate or Gazette notice)

  • Ensure details match exactly what’s on your ID and exam slip
  • Upload clear, readable documents—blurry scans may delay your application
  • If your school is closed, get a recommendation from the County Education Officer
  • Only one replacement is issued, so apply carefully
  • Result slips for KCPE (pre-2013) may not be available—consider a confirmation letter instead.
